If I have a problem, I talk to others about it. That's a good thing.
Sometimes I talk to others to distract myself. When the report I was supposed to write - until today - hasn't been finished, for example. Then I look for straw men.
100 companies are responsible for over 50% of global CO2 emissions. As early as the 1970s and 1980s, researchers from major oil companies recognised the potential impact of CO2 emissions on the climate.(1) Despite the clear scientific consensus, these companies chose to continue to invest in fossil fuels and politicise against climate action. Just like I did with my report.
We tend to ignore obvious facts, creating distractions to avoid uncomfortable change. This strategy of politicising problems instead of tackling them ultimately leads to necessary measures being delayed or prevented altogether.
By politicising, we turn our problems into the problems of others.
